Polycarbonate Roof vs 1000 lb log

Retractable Screens with Patio Cover - Suncoast Enclosures

Can Your Patio Roof Handle a 1000lb Log? Ours Can.

At Suncoast Enclosures, we don’t just talk about strength — we put our products to the test. In our latest video, we traveled to our Ottawa office to perform the ultimate Polycarbonate Roof durability test — and the results speak for themselves.

Cinder Blocks? No Problem.

We started simple: tossing a standard cinder block onto one of our installed Suncoast Polycarbonate Roofs. No cracks, no stress, no damage. Just solid, unshakable strength. This test alone proves why polycarbonate is the preferred roof material for 3-season rooms, patio covers, and outdoor living spaces across Canada and the U.S.

Then Came the Log…

But we didn’t stop there.

We took it up a notch — or ten — by dropping a 1000 lb log from 15 feet in the air directly onto the roof. And what happened?

Nothing. The roof stood its ground without flinching.

This test proves what we already knew: Suncoast’s polycarbonate patio roofs are built to withstand extreme impact and unpredictable weather.

Suncoast Louvered Roofs are more than a luxury upgrade for your outdoor space. They’re high-performance structures, custom-engineered for your environment. Whether you’re facing blizzards or blazing sun, our system is designed to:

  • Withstand extreme snow loads thanks to commercial-grade aluminum beams and precise support spacing
  • Seal tightly against rain, keeping your space dry underneath
  • Open and close with the touch of a button, giving you control over light, shade, and airflow
  • Last for decades with low-maintenance, corrosion-resistant materials

We don’t use cookie-cutter kits or off-the-shelf parts. Every Suncoast project is designed specifically for your home, your needs, and your climate.

Why Polycarbonate Is the Smartest Patio Roof Material

  • Impact Resistant: Unlike glass or other materials, polycarbonate doesn’t shatter. It absorbs impact without breaking.
  • UV Protection: Blocks harmful UV rays while still letting light into your space.
  • Lightweight but Strong: It’s 200x stronger than glass but a fraction of the weight — ideal for residential and commercial patio covers.
  • Long-Term Durability: Perfect for regions with hail, wind, heavy snow, or intense sun.
  • Low Maintenance: Designed to last for decades with minimal upkeep.

Designed for Harsh Climates – Built for Canada and the U.S.

Whether you’re dealing with freezing winters in Ottawa, hailstorms in Denver, or scorching summers in Dallas, our polycarbonate patio covers are engineered to perform year-round. From snow to sun, they’re made to endure what nature throws at them.

And let’s be honest — not many companies would drop a literal half-ton log on their roof system to prove it.

Ready to Build the Ultimate Outdoor Space?

Truck Parked on Louvered Roof

We Parked a Pickup Truck on Our Roof — Here’s Why

At Suncoast Enclosures, we believe in building outdoor spaces that are as durable as they are beautiful. But we don’t just make bold claims about strength—we back them up. That’s why we decided to do something a little extreme.

We parked a full-sized pickup truck on top of one of our Louvered Roofs.

And yes, it held. No cracks. No buckling. Just solid strength, exactly as engineered.

Why We Did It

Our Louvered Roof systems are built to handle the toughest climates in North America—from heavy snow loads in Canada to intense summer heat in the southern U.S. But we wanted to demonstrate what “engineered for strength” really means in a way you wouldn’t forget.

What better way than driving a 5,000+ lb truck onto one?

Polycarbonate Roof Durability Test

Polycarbonate Roof Patio Cover

How Tough is a Suncoast Polycarbonate Roof? We Put it to the Test!

At Suncoast Enclosures, we take pride in designing outdoor living solutions that not only enhance your space but also stand up to the toughest conditions. One of the key components that make our enclosures so reliable is the polycarbonate roof. Known for its strength, impact resistance, and durability, this roof is built to handle just about anything. But how tough is it, really? We decided to put it to the test — using golf balls, a baseball bat, and a whole lot of force.

In this durability test, we subjected the polycarbonate roof to impacts that go well beyond what it would typically encounter in everyday use. The results? Impressive, to say the least.

The Golf Ball Test: Simple Bounces, No Damage

We started with golf balls — a common source of damage for many homes and outdoor structures, especially in areas where golfing is popular. A golf ball can travel up to 120 mph (193 km/h), packing a serious punch when it makes contact with surfaces like glass or plastic.

To test the resilience of the polycarbonate roof, we threw multiple golf balls at it, simulating real-world impact. Time and time again, the golf balls bounced right off the polycarbonate with no visible signs of damage. Not a crack, not a dent — the roof stood up to the test without any issues.

This level of impact resistance is exactly why homeowners choose polycarbonate roofs over traditional materials. Whether it’s hailstones, golf balls, or falling debris, the polycarbonate roof is designed to take the hit and keep going.

Taking It Up a Notch: The Baseball Bat Test

After seeing how well the roof handled golf balls, we wanted to push it even further. So, we grabbed a baseball bat.

In this part of the test, we took direct swings at the roof with full force. The result? The polycarbonate showed incredible resilience, taking hit after hit with only minor dents to show for it. Despite repeated impacts from the bat, the roof never cracked, shattered, or broke through. While the surface of the polycarbonate might show small indentations from the bat, the structure remained intact and fully functional.

Why Polycarbonate?

The strength of polycarbonate lies in its molecular structure. Unlike traditional glass or plastic, polycarbonate is engineered to absorb and distribute impact energy, which prevents cracking or breaking. This makes it an ideal choice for areas prone to heavy weather, falling debris, or even stray golf balls.

Beyond its impact resistance, polycarbonate also offers other benefits:

  • UV Protection: Polycarbonate blocks harmful UV rays, making it a perfect solution for outdoor spaces where you want to enjoy natural light without exposure to harmful sun radiation.
  • Lightweight: Despite its strength, polycarbonate is lightweight, making it easier to install and handle compared to glass.
  • Weather Resistance: Whether it’s snow, rain, or extreme heat, polycarbonate stands up to the elements without warping or degrading.

Built for Real Life

At Suncoast Enclosures, we know that life happens — and sometimes that means unexpected impacts. Whether it’s from nature, sports, or accidents, your outdoor space should be able to handle whatever comes its way. This durability test proves that our polycarbonate roof is more than just a stylish feature — it’s built for real-life situations and designed to last.

If you’re looking to upgrade your outdoor space with a solution that combines beauty, durability, and protection, look no further than Suncoast Enclosures. Our polycarbonate roofs are ready to stand up to whatever life throws at them, and we’re here to help you create a space that you can enjoy in any season.
