Louvered Roof Heat Test

Las Vegas Heat Test - Louvered Roof - Temperature Comparison

Vegas Heat Test: Which Patio Roof Keeps You Cooler?

At Suncoast Enclosures, we don’t just build beautiful outdoor living spaces — we engineer them to perform in real-world conditions. So we took a trip to our Las Vegas office to run a side-by-side comparison of how our Suncoast Louvered Roof performs against a traditional insulated roof in extreme desert heat.

Our goal? To find out which roof keeps your patio cooler during the hottest part of the day — and which one cools down faster after the sun sets.

Test 1: Midday Temperature Comparison

We placed three thermometers in different locations:

  • #1 under the insulated roof
  • #2 in direct sunlight
  • #3 under the Suncoast Louvered Roof

Here’s what we found:

  • Direct sunlight: 119.1°F
  • Insulated roof: 97.5°F
  • Suncoast Louvered Roof: 95.5°F

Result: The Suncoast Louvered Roof came in 2 degrees cooler than the insulated roof — a surprising result considering the insulated roof is designed to block heat. So what’s going on here?

It’s All in the Engineering

Unlike dense insulated roofs that trap heat, the Suncoast Louvered Roof is designed to release it. Our hollow louver blades allow rising hot air to pass through more freely, keeping the space underneath cooler.

To prove this, we measured the surface temperatures of both roof systems using a thermal gun.

Test 2: Surface Temperature in the Heat

  • Insulated roof: 110–111°F
  • Suncoast Louvered Roof: 105–106°F

Result: The insulated roof is retaining significantly more surface heat, while the Suncoast Louvered Roof stays cooler — which directly impacts how comfortable the patio feels below.

Test 3: Cooling After Sundown

As the sun went down, we measured how quickly each roof released the heat it absorbed throughout the day:

  • Insulated roof surface: 89.4°F
  • Louvered roof surface: 77.0°F

Result: That’s a 28–29 degree temperature drop for the Suncoast Louvered Roof, compared to only 20–21 degrees for the insulated roof. This shows that the Suncoast system dissipates heat far more effectively, preventing lingering warmth in the evening.

Test 4: Ambient Temperature After Sunset

We also measured how warm it felt under each roof after the sun had gone down:

  • Insulated roof: 88.8°F
  • Direct light: 85.1°F
  • Suncoast Louvered Roof: 84.3°F

Result: The patio under the Suncoast Louvered Roof was not only more than 4 degrees cooler than the insulated roof — it was even cooler than the general ambient temperature in the yard. That’s the power of our innovative louver blade design, which naturally promotes airflow and heat dissipation, even when closed.

Bonus Comfort Tip

Want your patio even cooler? Open the blades to release trapped heat, then switch on an optional ceiling fan to circulate cool air throughout your space. With a Suncoast Louvered Roof, comfort is always in your control.

Why It Matters

When it comes to building a patio in a hot climate like Las Vegas, not all roof systems are created equal. The Suncoast Louvered Roof doesn’t just provide shade — it actively manages heat, keeping your outdoor space cooler during the day and more comfortable at night.

This real-world heat test is just one more reason why Suncoast Enclosures is leading the way in outdoor comfort and performance.

Polycarbonate Roof vs 1000 lb log

Retractable Screens with Patio Cover - Suncoast Enclosures

Can Your Patio Roof Handle a 1000lb Log? Ours Can.

At Suncoast Enclosures, we don’t just talk about strength — we put our products to the test. In our latest video, we traveled to our Ottawa office to perform the ultimate Polycarbonate Roof durability test — and the results speak for themselves.

Cinder Blocks? No Problem.

We started simple: tossing a standard cinder block onto one of our installed Suncoast Polycarbonate Roofs. No cracks, no stress, no damage. Just solid, unshakable strength. This test alone proves why polycarbonate is the preferred roof material for 3-season rooms, patio covers, and outdoor living spaces across Canada and the U.S.

Then Came the Log…

But we didn’t stop there.

We took it up a notch — or ten — by dropping a 1000 lb log from 15 feet in the air directly onto the roof. And what happened?

Nothing. The roof stood its ground without flinching.

This test proves what we already knew: Suncoast’s polycarbonate patio roofs are built to withstand extreme impact and unpredictable weather.

Suncoast Louvered Roofs are more than a luxury upgrade for your outdoor space. They’re high-performance structures, custom-engineered for your environment. Whether you’re facing blizzards or blazing sun, our system is designed to:

  • Withstand extreme snow loads thanks to commercial-grade aluminum beams and precise support spacing
  • Seal tightly against rain, keeping your space dry underneath
  • Open and close with the touch of a button, giving you control over light, shade, and airflow
  • Last for decades with low-maintenance, corrosion-resistant materials

We don’t use cookie-cutter kits or off-the-shelf parts. Every Suncoast project is designed specifically for your home, your needs, and your climate.

Why Polycarbonate Is the Smartest Patio Roof Material

  • Impact Resistant: Unlike glass or other materials, polycarbonate doesn’t shatter. It absorbs impact without breaking.
  • UV Protection: Blocks harmful UV rays while still letting light into your space.
  • Lightweight but Strong: It’s 200x stronger than glass but a fraction of the weight — ideal for residential and commercial patio covers.
  • Long-Term Durability: Perfect for regions with hail, wind, heavy snow, or intense sun.
  • Low Maintenance: Designed to last for decades with minimal upkeep.

Designed for Harsh Climates – Built for Canada and the U.S.

Whether you’re dealing with freezing winters in Ottawa, hailstorms in Denver, or scorching summers in Dallas, our polycarbonate patio covers are engineered to perform year-round. From snow to sun, they’re made to endure what nature throws at them.

And let’s be honest — not many companies would drop a literal half-ton log on their roof system to prove it.

Truck Parked on Louvered Roof

We Parked a Pickup Truck on Our Roof — Here’s Why

At Suncoast Enclosures, we believe in building outdoor spaces that are as durable as they are beautiful. But we don’t just make bold claims about strength—we back them up. That’s why we decided to do something a little extreme.

We parked a full-sized pickup truck on top of one of our Louvered Roofs.

And yes, it held. No cracks. No buckling. Just solid strength, exactly as engineered.

Why We Did It

Our Louvered Roof systems are built to handle the toughest climates in North America—from heavy snow loads in Canada to intense summer heat in the southern U.S. But we wanted to demonstrate what “engineered for strength” really means in a way you wouldn’t forget.

What better way than driving a 5,000+ lb truck onto one?
